Interchange Authority

An interchange authority (IA) is the responsible entity that authorizes implementation of valid and balanced interchange schedules between Balancing Authority Areas, and ensures communication of interchange information for reliability assessment purposes.

In the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) region, the ERCOT independent system operator is the sole registered IA. In addition to IA, ERCOT ISO is registered as:

  • Balancing Authority (BA)
  • Planning Authority (PA)
  • Reliability Coordinator (RC)
  • Resource Planner (RP)
  • Transmission Operator (TOP)
  • Transmission Service Provider (TSP)

For more information about registration criteria, refer to NERC’s Statement of Compliance Registry Criteria, found on the Compliance Registry External Link page.
