Balancing Authority

A balancing authority (BA) is the responsible entity that integrates resource plans ahead of time, maintains load-interchange-generation balance within a BA area, and supports interconnection frequency in real-time.

In the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) region, the ERCOT independent system operator is the sole registered BA. In addition to BA, ERCOT ISO is registered as:

  • Interchange Authority (IA)
  • Planning Authority (PA)
  • Reliability Coordinator (RC)
  • Resource Planner (RP)
  • Transmission Operator (TOP)
  • Transmission Service Provider (TSP)

For more information about registration criteria, refer to NERC’s Statement of Compliance Registry Criteria, found on the Compliance Registry External Link page.
